    DID YOU KNOW?
    • Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May.
    • The purpose of the holiday is to honor those who have died while serving the country in wars and to make sure future generations do not forget the costs of a free and undivided republic.
    • About 5,000 people attended the first large observance of the occasion at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C, in 1868.  Small American flags were placed at the site of each grave, a tradition followed by many national cemeteries today.  
    • The National Moment of Remembrance, which Congress established in 2000, encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.   
    • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs maintains 134 national cemeteries.  Several states have veterans' cemeteries as well.  About 1.1 million Americans have died in our nations's wars.
    • In 1915, the red poppy became a symbol of fallen soldiers in World War I after John McCrae, a Canadian medical officer, described red poppies in his famous poem, "In Flanders Fields."  Five years later, it .became the official flower of The American Legion Family and has since become a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice of men and women who served and died for their country during a time of war

    Out of the Past ~ ~


    This was written by the 19th President of the Oregon Dental Assistants Association about our very first President, Harriet G. Hamann.

    "I first met Harriet in the 50's when I started my career as a dental assistant.  She was there to meet me at the first Portland Dental Assistant Society meeting that I attended. She always made you feel welcome and was very helpful with every little detail.  I believe that she never missed a local meeting or a state meeting since she helped organize the first dental assistant meeting in 1940 with the dentists for the Pacific North West Dental Conference in Portland.  That meeting was the beginning of our State Dental Assistants Association.  She served as our first President and later held many offices for the Association.

    Harriet was a life member of the PDAS, ODAA, and the ADAA.  She liked to be working with our meetings and often took part in the Installation Ceremony.  Harriet was a lifetime resident of Portland, working 40 years for an oral surgeon, Dr. Frank Mihnos, until her retirement in 1970.  We worked in the same building downtown Portland and I often called upon her to help or discuss matters when I was performing duties in the association.  We young girls, as she'd call us, that we were her children and we were to listen to little old auntie.

    She was the center of attention at our Presidents banquet, always some what of a little clown, always cheerful and seeing that everyone was having a good time.  Harriet loved life.  After having to leave her apartment she resided in a lovely retirement home in SE Portland.  She was always doing some little things to make it more pleasant for everyone.  She loved the flowers and the trees and often walked around the yard, but best of all she liked to go to the shopping centers and we'd have a coke or we would laugh because it's now..non-alcoholic.  

    She lived a good life up to a month before her heart started giving up, although she was like her old self and never complained about her condition.  I visited her regularly and I feel as you all do that we have lost a very dear friend.  She didn't wake up one morning two days before her 93rd birthday, April 28th, but I know that she is hearing us from on the top of Mt. Hood where she requested that her ashes be dropped.  We miss you, Harriet ~ rest in peace....."

    As your present President, I can truly say it was a real pleasure to have known this lovely lady.  As April is quickly approaching as well as our state meeting, I hope you will give our Harriet a thought of thanks.


  • Oregon Dental Conference

    I would like to extend an invitation to you to attend the Oregon Dental Conference April 6-8, 2017 being held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, the City of Roses.
     
    The 2017 Oregon Dental Conference is the 125th annual session of the Oregon Dental Association.  The conference is the concurrent meeting of the ODA, the Oregon Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OSOMS), the Oregon State Association of Endodontics (OSAE), the Oregon Society of Periodontists (OSP), the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry (OAGD), the Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (OAPD), the Oregon Dental Assistants Association (ODAA), The Oregon Dental Executives' Association (ODEA), the Oregon Dental Hygienists' Association (ODHA), as well as a place for laboratory technicians from throughout the northwest to meet.
     
    There will be numerous courses to choose from and the Exhibit Hall is available to view new equipment, instruments, dental supplies, etc.  You can review the many possibilities on the website at www.oregondental.org.   ODAA Vice President, Mary Harrison, has arranged for some excellent speakers and topics:

    A-dec Seeking Market Research Participants 
    Help Define Future Products
     
    A-dec, a leading manufacturer of dental equipment and furniture, is seeking Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants and/or members of a dental team who routinely process and pack instruments for sterilization as well as load/unload and operate a chamber sterilizer for an upcoming research project.  During this project, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on a prototype of an A-dec product under development.  This research project will take place the week of April 10th 2017 at the A-dec corporate office located in Newberg Oregon and will require approximately 45 to 60 minutes of your time.  For your time, you will be provided a $50.00 gift card.

  • Dental Assistant's Recognition Week

    Dental Assisting continues to diversify and expand.  Whether working chair-side with the dentist, exposing radiographs, or managing the business office, teaching or working in insurance, or sales, dental assistants are vital to the success of the dental practice.  It's a date being remembered this year by the American Dental Assistants Association and  Oregon Dental Assistants Association.

    Dental Assistants Recognition Week, scheduled for March 5 - 11, 2017, is a week-long tribute to the commitment and dedication dental assistants exhibit throughout the year.

    "Dental Assistants:  Patient focused with passion and purpose"  is the theme for this annual Dental Assistants Recognition Week:  time for dental assistants to receive greater recognition for their own unique and diverse contributions to the dental profession and the dental health care of the public.
     
    Check out the ADAA website for ideas on how you might celebrate.

  • August Tip of the Month

    When cementing either a temporary or permanent crown:

    After placing the crown on the tooth, have a wet cotton swab ready to go round the tooth, in order to remove excess cement. After the cement has set for several minutes, take a second wet cotton swab around the margins. Then use an explorer around the margins to remove any remaining cement. Carefully use double knotted floss to go through the contacts to make sure there is no excess cement between the teeth. Make sure you check carefully into the gingival areas.
